The Problem with Litter
Between April 2017 and March 2018, a team of experienced assessors carried out a national survey of 7,200 sites for Keep Britain Tidy

The survey revealed that the problem of litter had become worse across England since the previous survey and that nationally there had been a 4% increase in sites failing due to litter with 14% of sites across England not meeting an acceptable standard for litter

The survey looks for the presence or absence of different types of litter and in 79% of sites surveyed found smoking-related litter present, an increase of 6% on the 2014/15 survey

Another 33% of sites were found to have fast food litter, a 1% increase and a litter type that has been on the increase since 2010/11, when it was observed on only 21% of sites

Alcoholic drinks-related litter has seen a sharp increase from 19% to 25% in 2017/18.
